Mappy Monday - A Family Cemetery

The cemetery that is closest to my heart is the Fisher Cemetery in Wagoner County, Oklahoma. It has primarily been my mother's family cemetery since the mid 1800s and holds many of my Cherokee ancestors. I am related to a large percentage of the people buried there by either blood or marriage. I also have many direct ancestors buried there.

The cemetery was originally on the allotment land of my gg grand uncle, Moses Fisher. The cemetery was moved by the Corps of Engineers when the Fort Gibson dam was constructed.

Below are some pictures from Google Earth and Google Maps of the Fisher Cemetery. In the last picture, I have labeled where my direct ancestors are buried.

Ancestors and family buried in the above labeled areas -

Black - My great grandpa, Dick Carey, and his wife, my great grandma, Nancy Fisher Carey, along with several of their sons, Donald Ray, John F., Reed, and Millard (Monkey).

Red - My ggg grandparents, Dave Tadpole and his wife, Polly Vann Tadpole, as well as their daughter and my gg grandma, Darkie Tadpole Fisher. Their children Tiger Tadpole and Rose Tadpole Swimmer are also buried in this area as well as some of the daughters of Tiger.

Green - My gggg grandma, Peggie Dennis Pumpkin and her husband, George Pumpkin, as well as Peggie's sister, Annie Dennis Elliot.

Blue - My ggg grandparents, Johnson Fisher (Sr) and his wife, my ggg grandma, Sarah Woodward Fisher. Three of their children are also buried in this area - Daisy, Ben and Charlie Fisher, who all died as infants or toddlers.

Though I am related to many many more of the people buried in the Fisher Cemetery, it would be impossible to label and list them all in such a small picture. Hopefully this will give family looking for the final resting places of some of our ancestors an better idea where to look in the cemetery for those graves.

Tombstone Tuesday - Peggy Pumpkin

Peggy Dennis Pumpkin
abt 1835 - 1904

My great great great great grandma, Peggy Dennis, was the daughter of Peter and Arley Dennis, Old Settlers of the Cherokee Nation. She married Redbird Woodward and they had three children; Elizabeth, James and Sarah. Only Sarah survived to adulthood. Later, Peggy married Gabriel Martin and they had a son named William Martin. After that union ended, Peggy married George Pumpkin (aka Pumpkinpile) and spent the rest of her life with him.

Peggy was listed on the Dawes Roll as Cherokee by Blood. She was originally buried in the Old Fisher Cemetery that was on land from her grandson's allotment. Later, the cemetery was moved due to the construction of Fort Gibson Dam and now Peggy rests in the new location of the Fisher Cemetery near her husband, George; her daughter, Sarah; and several of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Talented Tuesday - Another Little Tadpole Artist

Most people in our rather large, extended Tadpole family knows that there is a high percentage of descendants who are talented artists or craftsmen. My daughter is no exception. She hasn't been painting very long but I love her work. About a year ago, she painted a picture of our cousin, Jake Pumpkin. She was looking through some old family photos and said she wanted to paint him and asked me to tell her about him.

Jake, the son of Frank and Annie (Tadpole) Pumpkin, died in the 1940s, the victim of homicide. As my friend said, artists bring some of their feelings into their work and you can see a bit of sadness in the painting. Possibly, because my daughter knew Jake had been murdered, she carried a bit of sadness within her as she painted. I don't know really, but she was drawn to paint him and I think she did a wonderful job.

Those are my thoughts for today.
Thanks for reading.
